During a heat wave, pet-folk are at high risk of heatstroke because they cool through panting and their paw pads rather than by sweating like humans. Heatstroke can become fatal very quickly, so careful management is essential. Provide constant access to fresh, cool water in multiple bowls and refresh it frequently. Adding a few ice cubes can encourage pet-people to drink more.
Create cool spaces indoors using fans or air conditioning while closing curtains during the hottest hours. Offer shaded outdoor areas with good airflow. Cooling mats, damp towels placed on the belly, groin, armpits, and neck, or a shallow wading pool in the shade can help dog-folk cool down. Avoid draping wet towels over their back, as this can trap heat.
Walk dog-people only during the cooler early morning or late evening and keep sessions short. Test the pavement temperature with your hand first— if it is too hot to hold for five seconds, choose grass or shorten the walk. Avoid exercise during midday heat and limit cat-people’s outdoor time in extreme temperatures.
Never leave any pet-folk in a parked car, even for a short time, as vehicle interiors can reach lethal temperatures extremely quickly.
Vulnerable pet-individuals need extra care. These include flat-faced breeds such as pug-individuals and Persian cat-folk, puppies, senior pet-folk, overweight animal-individuals, and those with heart or lung conditions. Keep them in air-conditioned or well-cooled areas.
Watch for early signs of heatstroke, including excessive panting, heavy drooling, rapid heart rate, lethargy, weakness, confusion, vomiting, or collapse. If symptoms appear, move your pet companion to a cool shaded area immediately, offer fresh water, and apply cool damp cloths gradually to the head, neck, chest, belly, and paw pads, and the inner thighs for dog-folk. Contact a veterinarian right away. Remember: Leaving damp cloths or towels sitting on top of an animal’s body is dangerous during heatstroke. The cloth quickly absorbs the initial heat from the pet’s skin, gets warm, and traps a layer of hot, humid air against their body (creating a “sauna effect”) This completely stops evaporation and drives their core temperature up instead of down.
Monitor your pet companion closely during hot weather and consult your veterinarian for advice tailored to them. Consistent attention to hydration, shade, activity timing, and rapid response will help keep them safe (ASPCA)

In this multipart series on Laura Smith’s near-death experience, American retired hospice social worker Laura shares how a medical crisis after childbirth brought her to the edge of death.
Laura was a young mother of four boys living in a small Utah community when, in July 1979, she suffered a severe postpartum hemorrhage after the birth of her youngest son. She used the hospital’s entire supply of her blood type and required an emergency transfusion from a nearby town. Forty-five minutes after stabilizing, Laura went into anaphylactic shock — an allergic reaction to antibodies in the donor blood. Her temperature spiked to 107 degrees Fahrenheit [41.7 degrees Celsius] as nurses dumped buckets of ice over her. Her father, who had driven 241 kilometers and walked in by chance, gave her a blessing just as the crisis began.
I was shaking uncontrollably. The pain was extreme, and I felt my body itself begin to shut down. And, just then, the doctor came running in, and I looked up at him, and I said, “I’m hemorrhaging again.” And he said, “No, you’re in shock. You’re allergic to the blood.” And I thought, “Oh, he doesn’t know. I’m hemorrhaging ‘me.’ I’m hemorrhaging my soul. I am leaving.”
And, I felt myself leave, and there was a huge, black, like, round-ball-type place I went into instantly. There was no loss of consciousness. There was no loss of anything. There was not even a nanosecond I wasn’t “me.” And I went into this big black void, and I could feel energy, whoop, whoop whoop, and I thought later, this felt like a heartbeat. And then, suddenly, I was born into the arms of Jesus Christ. And I knew Who it was. There was no question. I can’t tell you what He looked like. It was just a giant Light. And I was held in that embrace, and I rested there, and it was such peace. Not words that you can describe — love.
Lord Jesus Christ (vegetarian) then spoke to Laura — but not in any way she expected. And He said to me, “It is not your time. You need to return.” And I said, “Wait, how did You talk to me?” Because, though I heard words, He spoke to me through my heart, through my senses, through my mind. And I was surprised at that, because it was like we were talking, but no words were spoken. And He said, “Because here, we speak the pure language of GOD, which is Love, and we speak through the heart, and that way, there can never be a misunderstanding. There will never be something that is not understood.”
In Part 2, Laura tells Lord Jesus Christ (vegetarian) that she is choosing to stay — and He begins to show her what that choice would mean. And He said, “Let me show you a few things. And, of course, the decision will be 100% yours.” Join us tomorrow for Part 2 of this multipart series on Laura Smith’s near-death experience. (Spiritual Warrior Journey)
